Glacier School Pakistan: Programme Framework

Introduction

The Glacier School Pakistan (GSP) is an educational and disaster risk reduction (DRR) initiative established by ClimateWatch under the Northern Citizen Community Board (NCCB). It aims to bridge the gap between scientific glaciology and local mountain community resilience across 8 highly vulnerable districts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral.

Program Pillars

  1. Glacier & Hydrological Literacy — Understanding glacial dynamics, accumulation, ablation, and downstream water supply dependencies.
  2. High-Altitude Disaster Risk Reduction — Local community warning signs for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), rockfalls, and snow avalanches.
  3. Indigenous Ecological Knowledge — Documenting and validating ancestral practices for water management, agricultural terracing, and hazard forecasting.
  4. Youth Leadership & Climate Advocacy — Building capacity for mountain youth to gather field data, document environmental impacts, and represent their communities at national and global forums.

Delivery Modalities

  • School Curricula Integration — Supplementing secondary science education with localized climate modules.
  • Residential Wilderness Camps — Intensive, field-based training camps located near active glaciers.
  • Community Risk Seminars — Monthly public dialogues facilitated by trained youth climate ambassadors.
